A Clarification on Calling a Tile

I wanted to share an important clarification regarding a rule that can sometimes cause confusion in American Mahjong.

When you call a tile, you are required to place the called tile on the top portion of your rack and then expose the tiles from the slope side of your rack.

After further clarification from the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL), this is considered a rule without penalty.

What does that mean?

Beginning with Fall 2026 leagues, placing your called tile incorrectly on the rack or exposing your tiles from the incorrect side will no longer be a valid reason to call a hand dead.

I know this can be confusing! American Mahjong has several rules that are considered “rules without penalty.” These are rules that players are expected to follow, but making a mistake does not automatically result in a dead hand or other penalty.

It is also important to remember that leagues and tournaments may make their own clarifications or house rules regarding how these situations will be handled within their specific events.

My goal is always to make sure we are playing as correctly and consistently as possible while also understanding the difference between a rule violation that carries a penalty and a rule that does not.

So, going forward: please continue to place and expose your called tiles correctly—but know that this particular mistake does not make your hand dead. 💕🀄️
